Images via little chief honeybee

A few years ago, the German job site Jobsintown.de used an image-based advertising campaign to transform familiar surfaces into portals into illusionistic three-dimensional space. Click through to see more!

As you can see, the advertisements interact with the city’s surroundings in very particular ways. Large images portray life-sized people crammed into your everyday vending machines, washing machines, ATMs and other boxed-up contraptions, struggling to deliver the output of these machines using meager space and materials. With the simple phrase “life is too short for the wrong job,” the ads have a message that is literally and figuratively very transparent, leaving a powerful impact.

These days, words and images are thrown at us from every angle. Only a select few can grab our attention, and the rest is relegated into our subconscious. While the “less is more” mantra has directed advertisements and signage towards more bare bones font and imagery to minimize distraction, it seems that “more is more” can shine through when used in the right way. These cheeky ads show us that even today, we can still empower the two-dimensional image to change the way we read space.
